Superflex goes for free beer

July 24, 2007

Danish artist collective Superflex participates in the exhibition ‘Social Systems’ at Tate St Ives from 7 July as part of a series of international commissions in Cornwall by contemporary visual arts organisation ProjectBase.

The Superflex collective is widely known for its free-beer project. Originally conceived by Superflex and students at the Copenhagen IT University, this project applies modern free software and open source methods to a traditional real-world product - namely the alcoholic beverage loved and enjoyed globally and commonly known as beer.

The recipe and branding elements of FREE BEER is published under a Creative Commons license, which means that anyone can use the recipe to brew their own FREE BEER or create a derivative of the recipe.

It is possible to taste the free beer at Tate St. Ives, as 10,000 bottles are produced by the St Austell Brewery in Cornwall. The exhibition includes figures formed by living people and illustrating the theme of the beer: one figure represents a copy-right sign and another represents a beer.

During the opening weekend the SUPERFLEX team will organise a public pub-quiz as part of the variety of events arranged by ProjectBase.

When: 7 july - 2 September. Monday - Sunday 10.00 - 17.20, last admission 17.00
