Olafur Eliasson is one of 14 artists attempting to redefine how visual arts can be created and experienced.

‘Il tempo del Postino’ is the title of a group show, in which some of the world’s leading visual artists – including Denmark’s Olafur Eliasson - are about to defy all accepted notions of the ‘exhibition’.

This experimental time-based show is curated by Hans Ulrik Obrist and Philippe Pareno and held, not in an art gallery, but at the Manchester Opera House.

With up to 15 minutes of ‘exhibition time’ each artist has created their own distinctive work using guest performance and specially commissioned music to create this new form of group show.

By focusing on time-based work this show will aim to redefine how visual arts can be created and experienced. Set in a theatre, it transforms the established gallery model into a shared audience experience. This world premiere is limited to only three UK performances.

Doug Aitken, Matthew Barney, Tacita Dean, Trisha Donnelly, Liam Gillick, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Douglas Gordon, Carsten Höller, Pierre Huyghe, Koo Jeong-A, Anri Sala, Tino Sehgal, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Olafur Eliasson.

Manchester International Festival is the world’s first international festival of original, new work. The inaugural festival will run from 28 June till 15 July and will take place every two years.
