There are four annual application deadlines:
1 January, 1 April, 1 August and 1 October.

Support is provided to foreign publishing houses that publish works translated from Danish, as well as Danish publishing houses that publish works translated into Danish.

Support is provided to works of fiction (prose and poetry), general works of non-fiction (including essays and biographies), comics/graphic novels, and children’s literature. Normally, support is only provided to works translated from the language in which they were originally written and in which the translator is a professional translating into his or her native language.

Special considerations for Nordic translations:
Support may only be sought for the translation of works from Danish. Support for translations into Danish must be sought from the respective country. In addition to the genres mentioned above, special editions of periodicals with a Nordic theme may also be subsidized. Support may also be sought for the translation of works that have been awarded the Nordic Council’s Literature Prize up to three years after the award.

Since the funds for Nordic translations are distributed on behalf of the Art and Culture Program of Nordic Culture Point, this must be acknowledged on the book’s colophon page and book jacket. If the book is printed in pocket format, it must appear on the back cover of the book. The logo of Norden and Nordic Culture Point must be used.

The work must be published in an acceptable form and technical quality suitable for use by libraries. In addition to sending the work supported to the Danish Literature Centre, three copies must also be sent to Nordic Culture Contact. More info at www.kknord.org

Download the application form, which must be used for all translation applications here (word-doc).

Applications will be processed by the Danish Arts Council’s Committee for Literature.

Applications submitted in a timely fashion by the stated deadline will receive a written response no later than three months after this deadline. It is not possible to provide a telephonic response on the status of individual applications.

Applicants should note that any application for translation support will be rejected, if the work has been published by the deadline for which the application was timely received.

Grants awarded will not be disbursed until the work has been published.

The support only covers the translator’s fee. In exceptional cases, publishers of Danish literature in translation may apply for publication support from the General Funds.
